Area law enforcement officials are reminding drivers to be alert when you are near a school bus. When you see their lights, you MUST STOP! Tennessee Law 55-8-151 states, “The driver of a vehicle upon a highway shall stop the vehicle before reaching the school bus. The driver shall not proceed until the school bus resumes motion or is signaled by the school bus driver to proceed or the visual signals are no longer actuated.”
If you are a licensed driver, “I didn’t know I had to stop” is not an excuse. Illegally passing a school bus is a Class C Misdemeanor. You will face a mandatory court appearance and fines up to $1,000. Please educate yourselves and help keep our kids safe.
