The Coffee County Sheriff’s Department began investigating a threat made towards Coffee County Schools on social media Sunday evening.
Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office, TBI and FBI identified a 16-year-old student from Franklin County as the person responsible for the threat after receiving help from Twitter.
Coffee County Sheriff Chad Partin said the student wrote on social media he planned to “shoot up” a school. The teen later confessed to making the threat.
Partin added, “I cannot stress to the parents of these children enough, you need to take responsibility of your kids. We’re not going to take this lightly.”
District Attorney Craig Northcott said, “It was a juvenile, and appropriate juvenile charges have been filed. All available steps have been taken by D.A.’s office and the Coffee County Juvenile Court to ensure that the juvenile in question is not in a position to act upon his threat. He has retained counsel and the Juvenile Court matter has been reset for further proceedings.”
