Complete Coverage of Board of Control Meeting July 8

President Mike Reed from Morristown-Hamblen High School West called the TSSAA Board of Control to order at 10:22 a.m. Wednesday July 8, 2020. All members were present.

The first item of business was a report from the TSSAA that the National Federation of High Schools is providing two high-quality video cameras to those schools who subscribe to their live streaming of high school sporting events over the NFHS Network. These are being provided at no charge, and normally cost about $5,000 each.

The second agenda item concerned the scheduling of the BOC Study Session for Classification of Schools. Reed announced that the session is being postponed until July 22 and will take place in the cafeteria of Siegel High School in Murfreesboro beginning at 1:00 p.m. Documentation to support the study will be emailed to participants, who are asked to print out their items so as to minimize handouts during the session.

Instead of moving on to item number three on the agenda, which was a vote on contingency plans for fall sports, Reed recognized Executive Director Bernard Childress, who reported that the TSSAA Legal Counsel was in discussions with the Governor’s Legal Team regarding the status of scheduling a full fall sports calendar for 2020, and, given the progress being made, asked that the Board of Control “delay voting until we know more.”

Childress added, “Conversations with the Governor’s legal team and TSSAA cousel are such that we recommend delaying a vote on contingency plans until more is known. If we have any chance on having fall sports, people need to help us out by social distancing, wearing masks, and washing hands in order to get the virus count down so we can have fall sports.”

Reed called for any discussion or questions. There being none, he accepted Chidress’ recommendation, and no vote on contingencies was taken.

The meeting was adjourned by Reed at 10:34 CST.
