Police Pursuit of reported Stolen Vehicle and man Allegedly Armed ends with an Arrest

On Friday July 1st 2022, the Estill Springs Police Department had received reports of a stolen vehicle at Speedy Sak in Estill Springs. The vehicle was reported stolen earlier in the morning.

An Estill Springs officer attempted to make a stop, but sped away and turned onto Eastbrook Rd.

The vehicle went through the Estill Springs city limits into the jurisdiction of Franklin County. Deputies joined in the pursuit throughout Franklin County.

While traveling in the Franklin County limits the vehicle allegedly ran civilian cars off the road.

The vehicle traveled towards Tullahoma city limits on highway 130 and Tullahoma officers were notified. There were State Officers and Tullahoma officers on S. Franklin St in Tullahoma and the vehicle almost collided head on with the patrol cars. Those officers included agents with the TBI, ATF, and Tullahoma Police.

Estill officers continued the pursuit Carrol St in Tullahoma heading eastbound towards Manchester.

The vehicle then proceeded to drive into oncoming traffic on Highway 55 where the vehicle came to a stop in Manchester.

The driver identified as Devonta Sheffield exited the vehicle allegedly with a handgun and fled on foot. Sheffield ran towards the train tracks trying to cross but could not, due to train cars being at a standstill. Officers told Sheffield to drop the firearm while being held at gun point. Sheffield then began to try to maneuver through the train cars and turned his back to officers. That’s when an officer moved closer to Sheffield and took him into custody.

Sheffield was charged with:

  • Resisting Stop, Frisk, Halt
  • Evading Arrest
  • Aggravated Assault x 2
  • Possession of Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
  • Unlawful Carrying or Possession of a Weapon

He is being held in the Coffee County jail under a $550,000 bond along with pending charges from Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, Estill Springs Police and Manchester Police.
