Strong pitching was the main story during Sunday’s District 6AAAA championship. The Coffee County Red Raiders defeated Shelbyville’s Golden Eagles 3-2 behind Timothy Henderson, who went 6 2/3 innings to pick up the win before giving way to Cole Pippenger as he shut the door with the bases loaded for the save. Henderson had nine strikeouts and allowed two runs.
Coffee County had to beat Shelbyville twice to win the championship. Game one was on Saturday when the Raiders beat the Eagles 9-2. Carter McKenzie homered. He, Aiden Robertson, and Nolan Jernigan knocked in two runs each in Saturday’s win. Bird Fellers picked a complete game for the win.
Palmer Edwards took the loss for the Golden Eagles on Sunday afternoon. He lasted 4 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and three runs while striking out two and walking no batters.
Co-District Player of the Year Caleb Moran had three of Coffee County’s six on the day, including his team-leading sixth homer of the year to lead the Raiders in hits.
Nick Johnson led the Golden Eagles with two hits in four at-bats.
Next up for Coffee County will be region tournament play beginning on Friday against the #2 seed from District 5 at the champion of that district.
