Reverend Melvin Lee Jacobs met Jesus face-to-face on January 24, 2021 at the age of 80 after a brief illness.
Mel was born in Norman, Oklahoma to Herbert and Ina Wilkerson Jacobs on August 19, 1940. He is preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ruby O’Rorke and Jamie Watt; and his son, Steve. He is survived by his wife, Myrlene Jacobs; son, Randy Jacobs; daughter, Brenda Williams (Steven); daughter-in-law, Rachel Jacobs; six grandchildren: Tyler Williams (Jen), Daniel Jacobs (Jessica), Bethany Lightfoot (Mitch), Fiona Jacobs, Eily Jacobs, and Finn Jacobs; two great-grandsons, Liam and Emmett Williams; brother, Herb Jacobs, and multiple beloved nieces and nephews.
After graduating from Norman High School, Norman, Oklahoma in 1958, Mel worked at the U.S. Post Office as a letter carrier. He married Myrlene (Phipps) Jacobs on October 20, 1961. Together they had three children – Randy, Brenda and Steve. They sang together as “The Jacobs Family” for several years.
After receiving a calling into ministry, he moved his family to Houston, TX, where he studied Ministry at Gulf Coast Bible College. From 1977 to 2015, he pastored churches in Bessemer, AL; Seminole, OK; Rockvale, TN; Fairhope, AL; Union City, TN; and Arab, AL before retiring and settling in Manchester, TN.
Mel loved missions and participated in over 20 missions trips, including Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, Kenya, Lebanon, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, and others. He enjoyed golfing, and he loved his Oklahoma Sooners and Alabama Crimson Tide football teams.
Mel’s “Celebration of Life” Memorial Service will be at CrossWay Baptist Church, (4194 Shelbyville Hwy, Murfreesboro, TN) on Saturday, February 6, 2021. Mel’s grandson, Rev. Tyler Williams, will officiate. The family will receive guests at CrossWay beginning at 9:30am until the service begins at 11:00. The service will also be streamed live via the Crossway’s Facebook page (CrossWay Baptist Church, @crosswayfam) and YouTube (CrossWay Baptist Church Murfreesboro TN) for anyone wishing to attend virtually. Those wishing to attend in person are requested to wear masks.
