After winning six consecutive games in the past seven days, including a 10-0 victory over Marion County Saturday morning, the defending state champion Tullahoma Wildcats lost focus during the first few innings Saturday afternoon at Griday Stadium, staking visiting Cookeville to a 7-1 lead.

It was so over that the THS sports app posted the score as a final. However, they needed to get the game over to race to Murfreesboro to watch their classmates play for a basketball state championship. The champion Cats decided they weren’t going to take a loss to the ‘Boro.

Tullahoma (7-6) rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, including the walk-off hit from J.D. Schmisseur, to beat Cookeville 8-7 and extend their winning streak to seven. Ironically, the Cats winning streak started with a 7-1 win over the Cavaliers (3-4).

The first six wins featured pitching performances that will be talked about for decades. In those six games, the Wildcats tossed four no-hitters, a perfect game that was broken up in the 7th inning (a one-hitter), and an eight-hitter.

The Wildcats will open District 8-AAA play Monday with a trip down Highway 41A to face the Franklin County Rebels (5-4). The two teams will complete the regular season district series at Grider Stadium on Tuesday. Both games begin at 6 p.m. on 93.9 The Duck, 939theduck.com, and the free Duck app.

The Wildcats jumped on top 1-0 in the first inning Saturday, but the Cavalier scored two in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, then added what they thought would be an insurance run in the seventh. The Cats had another idea. Down 7-1, they put the pressure on the Cavaliers and rallied for the comeback win.
