NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A new bill introduced in the Tennessee legislature aims to lower the minimum age for obtaining a school bus driver endorsement from 25 to 21 years old.

The proposed legislation amends Section 55-50-302 of the Tennessee Code, removing previous age restrictions and eliminating an additional subsection that likely contained related provisions. Lawmakers hope the change will help expand the pool of eligible school bus drivers, potentially addressing shortages in school transportation services.

If passed, the revised age requirement will take effect on July 1, 2025, allowing school districts and state agencies time to adjust policies and implement necessary training measures. Supporters argue that the bill creates opportunities for younger drivers while maintaining safety standards, though some critics may raise concerns about experience and qualifications.
