Duck River Electric Membership Corporation (DREMC) is urging its members to reduce electricity usage as the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has implemented Steps 10 and 20 of its Emergency Load Curtailment Program starting at 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20.
Step 10 of the program requires DREMC to internally cut back on electricity usage at its own facilities, while Step 20 asks all customers within TVA’s service area—including DREMC members—to voluntarily reduce their electric consumption where possible.
The conservation request comes as the National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory through Friday, warning that nighttime temperatures and wind chills could drop into the teens and single digits. With heating systems working harder to combat the cold, energy demand is expected to surge, impacting both power supply and utility bills.
DREMC encourages members to take simple steps such as lowering thermostats, delaying the use of large appliances, and turning off unnecessary lights to help ease strain on the electrical grid.
“We appreciate our members’ cooperation in conserving electricity during this period,” said DREMC in a statement. “Together, our small steps can have a big impact.”
DREMC will provide updates once TVA lifts the load curtailment measures. For now, members are urged to stay warm and take necessary precautions while safely reducing their energy consumption.
