A Tennessee House subcommittee rejected a bill Tuesday that would have required all driver's license tests to be administered in English.

The measure, sponsored by Republican Rep. Kip Capley of Summertown and Republican Sen. Bo Watson of Hixson, failed in a 5-3 vote in the House Transportation Subcommittee.

The bill would have barred the use of translation dictionaries or interpreters for the written portion of the test.

Republican members of the subcommittee expressed concerns about the impact on international industries in Tennessee, including Nissan and Volkswagen. They cited opposition from the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development and the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce.

Rep. Dan Howell, a Cleveland Republican, voted against the bill, stating it would affect those legally in the state on work visas or green cards.

Currently, the Tennessee Department of Safety offers written exams in German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish, in addition to English.

The bill's defeat effectively halts its progress this legislative session.
