Evacuation at Shelbyville Central High School

A suspicious item resembling a novelty grenade in a student’s backpack led to a lockdown at Shelbyville Central High School on Thursday. The incident began when a student reported seeing concerning items in another student’s backpack around 11 a.m., prompting a full evacuation of all students and staff due to a possible bomb threat. The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) Bomb Squad and the Bedford County Sheriff’s Department conducted a thorough investigation, ultimately determining the item was a harmless novelty grenade, not an actual explosive. After being evacuated to nearby Harris Middle School, students were dismissed around 12:30 p.m. for the rest of the school day, allowing parents to pick up their children. Regular school bus service continued as usual.
