The Franklin County Sheriff's Office has implemented a county-wide automated license plate recognition (ALPR) system named S.A.I.N.T., which stands for Surveillance Assisting Investigations Narcotics and Traffic. The system, a cooperative effort between the Sheriff's Office and local police departments, became fully operational on April 2nd. Within its first day of operation, S.A.I.N.T. identified a stolen SUV, which was subsequently recovered and returned to its owner. The Sheriff's Office also reported that the S.A.I.N.T. system aided in solving three theft investigations prior to its full implementation. Officials emphasized that the S.A.I.N.T. system is not designed to issue traffic tickets and is not connected to any camera systems that do so. The system is intended to assist law enforcement in investigations related to stolen vehicles, narcotics, and traffic-related incidents.
