Stewarts Creek's power run game proved to be the difference as the Red Hawks topped Tullahoma 33-21 in the 2024 season opener Friday night in Smyrna.
Jeremy Smith tallied 231 yards rushing on 13 carries and a pair of touchdowns to lead the home squad’s ground attack.
A back-a-fourth affair throughout the first half tilted in favor of Stewarts Creek late in the first half after a Tullahoma punt, the Red Hawks capped a 12-play drive with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Jerry Taylor to Grady Harvey to give Stewarts Creek a 19-14 lead which would hold until halftime.
Tullahoma failed to capitalize on quality field position on a pair of drives after forcing a Stewarts Creek fumble and punt on consecutive drives to start the second half.
A 62-yard Smith rushing touchdown pushed the deficit to two scores late in the third. Lucas Reed and Alex Bobo connected for their second TD of the night to pull Tullahoma back within five early in the fourth, but ultimately, the ground attack of the Redhawks was too much to overcome as they’d strike right back with a 44-yard touchdown run from Caleb Floyd to cap the scoring on the night and secure the victory.
Reed finished the night 10-20 for 122 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in his first varsity start.
Alex Bobo had five receptions for 83 yards and two touchdowns to earn Owens Provisions and Apparel Player of the Game Honors.
Marvancy Johnson led the Cats on the ground with 17 carries for 159 yards.
