Tennessee lawmakers have taken the next steps to prohibit the state’s property tax. On Wednesday, legislators introduced an amendment to the state constitution. The joint resolution aims to prohibit the general assembly from permitting a state tax on property. The current law allows for property, according to its value, to be taxed by any authority at the state, county, or municipality level. If the joint resolution passes, Tennesseans will vote on it during the 2026 November general election.
