Tennessee Population Predicted to be 8 Million by 2040

Tennessee’s population is growing rapidly. In fact, researchers expect at least eight million people to reside in the state by 2040.

For example, from 2010 to 2020, about 400,000 people moved to Tennessee. In just the past three years—2020 to 2023—that number has already increased.

Three main factors are changing Tennessee’s population: births, deaths, and net migration.

The data also projects Tennessee becoming a more diverse state. While all races continue to grow, Hispanics are forecast to grow the most, doubling by 2040.
