More than $30 million in Emergency Relief funding is being sent to Tennessee for roads and bridges damaged by Hurricane Helene. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s announced that these funds are a “quickly released down payment” toward repairs. U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has been regularly briefed on the ongoing recovery and repairs and has communicated with Gov. Bill Lee. Secretary Buttigieg also recently briefed President Joe Biden on the impacts and recovery efforts. Helene caused significant damage to infrastructure in eight East Tennessee counties. “The damage includes roadway washouts, culvert loss, and the need for bridge repairs and replacements, resulting in the closure of I-40 and I-26 near the Tennessee-North Carolina state line.”
