Manchester, TN – During the January 13, 2025, Manchester City School Board meeting, Dr. Joey Vaughn announced that Westwood Middle School will soon implement a new weapons detection system to improve campus safety. The system, purchased with school safety funds from the Tennessee Department of Education, will feature CEIA’s OPENGATE® detectors, designed for automatic screening of individuals with bags and backpacks for potential mass casualty metal threats.
Before installation, the school plans to hold a parent meeting to introduce the system, demonstrate its use, and address any questions. The detectors, weighing 15 pounds each, are portable and intended for seamless integration into school security procedures.
This proactive measure reflects the district’s ongoing commitment to student and staff safety
