WINCHESTER, TN (April 24, 2025) – Winchester Utility System has acknowledged that some customers have received unusually high electric bills recently. In a public statement, the utility explained that an internal investigation revealed a former employee was not accurately reading electric meters. This resulted in some customers being underbilled over multiple billing cycles.

When the utility obtained correct meter readings, the underread balances led to larger-than-normal bills for some customers, causing confusion and frustration. Winchester Utility System admits they were slow to recognize the full extent of the problem and did not communicate clearly when initial concerns were raised.

The utility says it has corrected the meter-reading issue and taken steps to prevent recurrence, including dismissing one employee and strengthening internal processes and improving customer communication.

Winchester Utility System is urging affected customers to contact their customer service department at 931-967-2238 or visit their office at 219 2nd Ave., NW, Winchester, TN 37398 to discuss their bills and explore flexible payment options. The utility is committed to transparency and rebuilding customer trust.
