Raiders hold off Collinwood for Region Win

Timely offense key stops led the Moore County Raiders to a win over region foe Collinwood Friday night in home finale in Lynchburg.

It was a slow start offensively for both teams as Moore County turned the ball over on downs twice inside the 10 on their first two possessions and Collinwood punted on their first two drives. That led to a scoreless first quarter.

The Raiders struck first on their third possession early in the second as Connor Partin snuck in from 4 yards out. The two-point try was no good making it 6-0 Moore County 4 seconds into the 2nd.

Collinwood answered right back literally as the Trojans Nicholas Sanderson returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown. Collinwood would also fail on the two-point try keeping the score knotted at 6 with 11:40 to play in the half.

Moore County responded with an 5:18, 11 play, 49-yard drive capped again with a 4 yard rushing TD from Partin. The two-point conversion was good this time making it 14-6 with 5:50 to go in the 2nd.

Collinwood had a turnover on downs and a interception on their next two drives and Moore County had a pick and then ran out the half on their final two possessions of the half to keep it at 14-6 at the break.

Collinwood fumbled the opening kickoff of the second half and Moore County recovered but they’d turn it over on downs. The Trojans then fumbled to stall their first possession of the half. After each team traded punts on their next drive Moore County got some breathing room thanks to a 46-yard touchdown connection between Partin and Peyton Martin. Again, the two-point try missed making it 20-6 Raiders with 4:20 left in the third.

Collinwood got their only offensive score of the night on the next drive going 61 yards in 10 plays in a drive that ended the third and began the 4th and was capped by a one-yard TD run by Fletcher Thompson on 4th and goal. The Trojans missed the two-point try to give Moore County an 8-point lead 20-12 with 10:50 left in the game.

Each side either punted or turned it over on downs on each of their next two drives before Moore County iced the game with a 12-yard Dawson White touchdown run with :55 seconds remaining. From there time ran out on Collinwood who showed no urgency on their final possession and held on to their final timeout as Moore County held on for the 27-12 victory.

Connor Partin who finished the night with 3 total touchdowns (2 rushing 1 passing) was named the Riddle Agency Player of the Game.

Moore County now 3-5 overall and 2-3 in Region 5-1A hits the road next Friday for another region game at Cornersville. Pregame coverage starts at 6:00 with Kickoff at 7:00 on WHMT 105.1 and 95.9!
