Westwood Soccer Opens Season with Tie

Westwood Middle School started their boys’ soccer season with a match against Rocky Fork from Smyrna.

Rocky Fork is much larger than Westwood. The varsity game ended in a 1-1 tie, and the JV game ended with Westwood losing 4-0.

The Rockets lost their top three leading scorers from last season as they moved up to 9th grade.

The coaching staff is still very optimistic that this year’s team can do some great things. Defensively, on Saturday, Westwood played well, and the midfield played hard as they were up against some very talented players but couldn’t get the offense going when it came to scoring. The coaches feel they left two goals on the field, with one hitting the crossbar.

This will be a very tough schedule for the Rockets this year, with over half the teams scheduled more than double the size of Westwood.

Coach Kevin Smith and Coach Pete DeWolfe feel this team can win or be competitive in their non-conference games. As it is every year, Westwood’s goal is to win their conference championship, as they have for the last four years. The Rockets have not lost a conference game in those four years.
