Two Area Counties Vote on 23-24 Budgets

The Coffee County Commission recently approved a $26.9 million county budget for the 2023-24 fiscal year with a deficit of $1.5 million. The tax levy in Coffee County will be the same as it was for the 2022-2023 fiscal year.

Ten commissioners voted in favor of the budget, and six voted no.

In Lincoln County, a budget has not been passed. After a meeting that saw heavy debate and a rowdy crowd, the Lincoln County Commission failed to pass a budget this week or a property tax increase for the second time in two months.

The commission was considering a property tax increase of 86 cents as a part of their annual budget.

The commission debated the issue for a couple of hours, with different commissioners also proposing a tax rate of $2.90 and $2.70, neither of which were approved.
