EV Renewal Fee Doubles in Tennessee

The annual renewal fee EV drivers pay the state of Tennessee has doubled since last year — from $100 to $200.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation receives money from Tennessee’s gas tax, which is 26 cents a gallon and is for building and upkeep of roadways throughout the state.

As drivers buy more electric cars, TDOT saw their revenues drop. TDOT reserves the right to raise or lower the registration cost by 3 percent each year. In 2026, the EV rate is expected to increase to $274.
