On Monday night, the Tullahoma Board of Mayor and Alderman unanimously approved purchasing and installing a Safe Haven Baby Box for the community.
This decision came after a passionate citizen, Shaylen Seig, brought forward a petition signed by 142 residents, highlighting the importance of offering this service.
The Safe Haven Baby Box will provide a safe and anonymous option for parents to surrender their newborns, ensuring they receive the care and attention they need.
The city extends its heartfelt gratitude to Shaylen, who spearheaded this effort, and everyone who supported this cause. Stay tuned for updates on the installation process.
More about the Safe Haven Baby Box:
The Tennessee Safe Haven law allows mothers of newborns to surrender unharmed babies to designated facilities within two weeks of birth without fear of prosecution. As long as the baby is unharmed and the child is surrendered within two weeks of birth, the mother—or parents—will not be prosecuted and is assured of complete confidentiality.
The law was enacted to reduce the number of unsafe abandonment of babies.
The Secret Safe Place for Newborns of Tennessee Help Line is 1-866-699-SAFE. It is a confidential service.
