Tensions were high during Tuesday’s Coffee County Commission meeting concerning the Planning Commission.
Coffee County Mayor Judd Matheny wanted to remove five members, and those members were planning to fight back. Matheny planned to remove Chairman Steve Cunningham and members Carole Willis, Randy Harrell, Dennis Hunt, and Paul Elam “for cause,” saying they had not attended required training.
A hearing was planned before the full Coffee County Commission on Tuesday, but Commissioner Terry Hershman made a motion to remove the item from the agenda, and it passed 11-4.
The public comments about this issue became heated, with some audience members asking and receiving extra time to speak against the proposal and another audience member saying she was in favor.
The Tennessee Comptroller’s office says the county must follow the state law about planning commissions.
There is no word if future steps will be taken concerning this issue.
