The Tullahoma Police Department received a call late Tuesday morning about a possible death at 1909 E Lincoln St. Upon their arrival, the body of Coffee County Mayor Judd Matheny was discovered deceased.

Tullahoma Police said that Mayor Matheny dedicated his life to serving his community as a successful businessman, farmer, and committed public servant. He was elected as Coffee County Mayor in August 2022 and was a previous long-term Tennessee State Representative for the 47th District. Matheny’s leadership and dedication will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
This ongoing investigation has been handed over to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations.
In the meantime, Tullahoma Police extends our support to all affected by this loss.
In a press conference on Tuesday night, District Attorney Craig Northcott said that no evidence of trauma, foul play, or self-inflicted wounds were found in the preliminary investigation, but an autopsy will be conducted.
Coffee County Pro Tem Dennis Hunt spoke at the press conference and said that per statute, he will assume the duties as mayor. He said in an emotional statement that county government operations will continue as usual without disrupting services to citizens.
