Westwood Soccer to play for Conference Tournament Title

On Wednesday, April 26, 2023, Westwood played in the semifinals against Liberty.

Coach Kevin Smith stated he knew Liberty would come in and compete as they are coached well and by a class act coaching staff. At the end of the 1st half, it was Westwood 1 to 0. Coach Smith stated at half that they would have to change some things to score more. The changes were given to the players, and the Rockets executed by scoring 5 goals in the second half. The game ended with Westwood winning 6 to Liberty 0.

Two goals each were scored by Joan Deanda, and Aiden Walker,. One goal each was scored by Michael Vieras and Gaiden Stension.

Westwood finished first in regular conference play for the 4th year in a row under Coaches Kevin Smith and Pete DeWolfe. Liberty finished 4th in the regular season, but the two schools have had competitive matches in recent years. Coach Smith stated Liberty has come closest to beating Westwood than any other team in the conference as they tied in their match last season. No other team in the conference has beaten or tied Westwood besides Liberty in the past four years.

Coach Smith stated the Liberty players fought hard to the last whistle and were a class act. At one point in the game, a Westwood player was injured, and a Liberty player helped Coach Smith assist him to the sideline.

Westwood will host Community Friday at 6 pm at Westwood, weather permitting, for the conference tournament title. If the game is rescheduled, it will be played at 6 pm on Monday at Westwood.
