Gov. Lee Signs Executive Order to Strengthen Background Checks

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee on Tuesday said he would be asking lawmakers to bring forward measures to make it harder for people who are a threat to themselves or others to get weapons.

Lee signed an executive order Tuesday to strengthen background checks. Lee said the order would set a 72-hour period for reporting new criminal activity for gun owners. It would also ensure courts submit timely information directly to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

The TBI would be required to take a closer look at the current process for buying a gun and try to find ways to make sharing important information quickly.
