Back to School Sales Tax Holiday begins Friday, Grocery Tax Holiday starts Tuesday

Tennessee’s traditional sales tax holiday on clothing, school supplies, and computers begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 28, 2023, and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 30, 2023.

During this time, clothing, school supplies, and computers may be purchased tax-free.  Certain restrictions apply. Items sold online are also eligible. Items must be purchased for personal use, not for business or trade.

Exemptions include clothing that costs less than $100 per item, most school supplies under $100, and personal computers valued at $1,500 or less. Laptops under that price also qualify.

The tax break will suspend state and local sales tax, giving Tennesseans the opportunity to save up to 9.75% on back-to-school items.

For 2023, Tennessee’s General Assembly has approved a three-month grocery tax holiday on food & food ingredients which begins at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, October 31, 2023.
