Nashville in discussions to host Free Agent League

The Nashville Sounds, founded in the 1970s by legendary baseball manager Larry Schmittou , was a Triple A affiliate of the Texas Rangers over the last couple of years. Talk of eliminating minor league baseball and the onset of the coronavirus and subsequent delay in setting a MLB season in 2020 left the Sounds looking for a purpose. Now, Sounds General Manager Adam Nuse announced last week that there may be a baseball season in Nashville to come.

Nuse stated that the franchise has discussed a 40-game season for a league of unsigned players this year. The discussions include the Mayor’s office, local health officials, and MLB The Sounds began as the Nashville Vols and played in Sulphur Dell on the west side of the city before the team folded and Schmittou resurrected minor league ball with the Sounds at Herschel Greer Stadium near Fort Negley on the other side of town. The Sounds moved to a new ball park closer to the original Sulphur Dell location in 2015. What began as First Tennessee Park is now known as First Horizon Park, and seats 10,000 fans.
