The Decherd Police Department has received multiple reports of check cashing fraud over the past week.
It has been determined that the perpetrators are likely stealing checks from mailboxes and then forging checks to cash on the victims’ accounts. One subject has been arrested in connection to these crimes; thus far, 18-year-old Semaj Jackson of Lithia Springs, GA, was arrested for theft of mail. Jackson was apprehended with mail from multiple addresses in Franklin County.
The Decherd Police Department is asking residents to monitor their bank accounts for suspicious activity and any checks that have been mailed but not cashed in the expected amount of time.
Multiple other suspects have been identified, and the investigation is ongoing. If you have any information about suspicious activity pertaining to the mailboxes at your residence or business, please contact the Decherd Police Department add 931-962-1675.
