Renting in Some Areas of the State takes Larger Portions of Household Incomes

Anyone who has recently gone hunting for a new apartment to rent experiences the same headache. It seems like every year, rent prices go up while availability goes down.

When it comes to the highest percentage of a household income to pay rent, here are some area cities ranked.

#23. Shelbyville

– Median gross rent as a percentage of household income: 26.3%
– Median rent: $801
– Number of renter-occupied homes: 5,279 (29.5% of all housing units)

#17. Tullahoma

– Median gross rent as a percentage of household income: 27.2%
– Median rent: $756
– Number of renter-occupied homes: 11,879 (28.7% of all housing units)

#15. McMinnville

– Median gross rent as a percentage of household income: 27.4%
– Median rent: $679
– Number of renter-occupied homes: 4,690 (29.7% of all housing units)

#1. Memphis

– Median gross rent as a percentage of household income: 31.2%
– Median rent: $998
– Number of renter-occupied homes: 198,260 (39.3% of all housing units)
